Canoe, kayak, or Canadian canoe?

Canoe, kayak, or Canadian canoe?

Canoe, kayak, or Canadian canoe – which should you choose?

You want to learn to paddle but have heard different terms being used. What actually applies, and which type of vessel should you choose: canoe, kayak, or Canadian canoe? There is some confusion around the terminology, but fundamentally there are different types of canoes suited for different activities and conditions.

Canoe is a collective term

Canoe is an overarching term for smaller, narrow vessels propelled by muscle power using a paddle (sails are also used in some cases). A canoe has a pointed bow and stern and can be open or have a covered deck with one or more cockpits. The word canoe originates from the Caribbean word "canoa", meaning boat. In Swedish, "kanot" is used as a collective term for the two main types: kayaks and Canadian canoes.

Kayak or Canadian canoe – what is the difference?

The canoes of the North American indigenous peoples are called Canadian canoes in Sweden. They were originally built from birch bark or hides but are today manufactured from plywood, aluminum, or durable plastic. Canadian canoes are paddled with a single-blade paddle and are best suited for calm inland lakes and waterways where the wind does not have much impact.

The kayak, on the other hand, has its origins in Arctic regions and has always had a covered deck. Originally built with a skeleton of driftwood or bone and covered with hide or canvas, modern kayaks are now made of fiberglass or polyethylene. They are paddled with a double-blade paddle and are better suited for open water and varying weather conditions.

Advantages of kayaks and canoes

Both kayaks and canoes have their own advantages depending on the intended use. Here are some factors to consider:

Advantages of a kayak:

  • Stable and suited for open water.

  • Enclosed cockpit that reduces the risk of water getting in.

  • Easy to maneuver and maintain course.

  • Good storage compartments with watertight storage options.

  • Fast and efficient paddling with a double-blade paddle.
