The first thing to consider is where you plan to paddle. Are you only going to paddle on lakes, or will you be in the archipelago and along the coast? If you plan to stay on lakes and smaller waterways, a shorter kayak is the best choice. If you prefer to paddle along the coast where there can be larger waves, a longer kayak is preferable. The best sea kayak is one that is adapted to your conditions. If you want to paddle with a friend or with your child, a tandem kayak is a great option. These are very easy to paddle and are steered by the person in the rear cockpit. All our kayaks from Havspaddeln are stable and suitable for both beginners and more experienced paddlers.
Absolutely not! Most kayaks have a rudder, but far from all. The rudder allows you to more easily steer your kayak in the right direction using the pedals without having to put maximum effort into each paddle stroke. All our sea kayaks from Havspaddeln come with a rudder included. The skeg helps increase tracking stability and makes it harder for the wind to push the kayak sideways if you paddle in windier conditions. If you plan to paddle a lot at sea or in windier weather, a kayak with a skeg is preferable.
A plastic kayak is much more durable than a fiberglass kayak. Admittedly, a fiberglass kayak has more shine, but all that glitters is not gold. With a plastic kayak, you do not need to worry about damaging your kayak if you bump into something or if you choose to pull it up onto a rock ledge or a dock. A fiberglass kayak is much more sensitive and cannot withstand the same handling. A fiberglass kayak is admittedly slightly lighter, but once the kayaks are in the water, the difference is not that significant.
Sea kayaks come in both 1-layer and 3-layer polyethylene plastic. Which of these materials is best depends partly on the quality of the plastic and partly on the kayak's hull shape. If you think your kayak will be subjected to many hard impacts, 1-layer plastic is preferable. For example, whitewater kayaks are made from 1-layer plastic. If you will instead paddle in more open waters and want an extra torsion-resistant long kayak, then 3-layer plastic is preferable.

One of the best advantages of a plastic kayak is that it essentially requires no maintenance at all. Strong sun and air pollution can cause the condition and appearance of your kayak to deteriorate. Choosing between a tandem kayak or two single kayaks is something many people consider. The right decision varies from case to case. A family often benefits from a tandem kayak, as it works well for paddling with children who are too small to paddle alone. The tandem kayak can also be paddled solo, making it very versatile. Two single sea kayaks for beginners are recommended if you know there will be many solo trips as well, or if you have older children who want to try paddling on their own. Sea kayaks typically have a longer and narrower hull for better tracking stability and are specially designed to handle more challenging and varying conditions encountered on open water, such as seas, fjords, or larger lakes. Additionally, sea kayaks have greater capacity for gear and equipment.
A regular kayak is shorter and has a wider hull that provides stability and is easier to maneuver. They are optimized for paddling on calm waterways, lakes, or sheltered coastlines with limited exposure to waves and wind.
For paddling, basic equipment includes a life jacket, paddle, and spray deck, as well as safety equipment such as a paddle float, kayak pump, and compass. Depending on the water temperature, you may need clothing that protects against moisture and cold. Also consider sun protection and a sun hat as needed, as well as a water bottle and waterproof bag to protect your personal belongings.

Some important safety measures when paddling include always wearing a life jacket, staying updated on weather conditions and winds. Plan your paddling trips in advance, inform someone of your route and expected return time, and plan your route according to your ability. It is also important to learn how to get back into the kayak if you fall into the water, and to practice assisted rescue (i.e., getting help from another paddler to get back into the kayak).
To choose the right kayak for you, it is good to try different models and sit in the kayak to see if it fits your body and provides enough space and comfort. As a beginner, it can be beneficial to choose a slightly wider and more stable kayak for a better initial sense of balance and confidence on the water. More experienced paddlers may be comfortable with narrower and faster kayaks that require more technique and balance. If you are a heavier paddler, a larger kayak to maintain stability and buoyancy may be a good choice.
